UPSC Cracker!!

Considering the increasing number of students interested to write Civil Service Examinations, Students' Union arranged a guest lecture on 5th August 2010 in which the speakers were two of our very own, Mr.Annamalai IPS (2007 SW Mech) and Mr.Mohammed Shafirullah IAS (2003 SW EEE). Having cleared their respective examinations this year, they spoke about the examination pattern and methods students can follow to get past this exam and join the Civil Service. The fact that the hall overflowed with a large number of interested students shows that PSG Tech has a lot of future administrators within. Students Union thanks Mr.Annamalai and Mr.Shafirullah for sharing their experience and wishes them all the best in shaping future administrative policies and bringing a positive change in the society.

The Bright Three Days!

More than a 1000 new buds were seen blossomed on the ever-fertile Wisdom Tree during “The Bright Three Days”. Even though raw and innocent they are ready and enthusiastic to bloom with knowledge and responsibility eventually becoming another seed carrying the character and personality laid powerfully and permanently within them. It is with the help of these traits that they will successfully undergo the highly challenging journey ahead before finally giving birth to another Wisdom Tree themselves.

The Bright Three Days here is a metaphor used for the three days of admissions, the same way as new buds for the freshers.

Stating back the old proverb, “Anything that starts well ends well”, the admission was made so smooth that the parents were assured about the good college life of their wards.

Starting from the entrance to the exit point, the parents didn’t feel any kind of discomfort at any point of the process. Many stations were put up at different locations to help guide the new-comers.

It officially started with a volunteers meeting on 22-07-2010 (Thursday). During the meeting, the volunteers were briefed by the Deans about the working of the whole setup. Strict but kind instructions were given that the parents should be made completely satisfied with the admissions.

On the first day (23-07-2010), the process started at 02 00 PM. Since it was during a weekday, only the students from locations in and around Coimbatore were called. It was easy for them to go home and come back for the orientation. More than 250 students were admitted during the half day session.

The second day was a full day session. Students from all around Tamil Nadu except Chennai were called. There were four different sessions. Thanks to the preparedness of SU, all the sessions were started 10 minutes even before the allotted time. Around 1200 students were admitted.

The third day commenced with students from Chennai pouring into the college. The day had just two sessions. All the admissions were completed way ahead of the target time. The admission of the MQ also was done subsequently.

Punctuality was the motivating word during all the three days. The reasons for the success were the fail-proof system, involvement of the management and the involvement of the student volunteers.

Coming to the flow of en-masse, as soon as the parents and student entered the college gate, a help desk was waiting for them in front of the D block conference hall. The SU made sure that at least two smiling and approachable faces were always available there to clear any queries of the arriving population.

Then they were guided to the superfluous number of chairs arranged at the quadrangle. As the time of the sessions came near every student along with one parent were guided to the token place on the first floor of A Block. After the duo collected the token, they were escorted into A209.

At A209, individual attention was given by the volunteers. Four bunches of certificates and attested copies were arranged into a file with the help from the volunteers. Xerox facility was made available during all the three days. Attestations were carried out easily because of the courtesy of the ANOs from NCC.

Then, the duo was guided to A 207. The token given was collected from them and they were made to sit according to first come first served basis. The verification team cross checked the authenticity of the certificates. The students, in a batch of 10 were guided to the Principals office while the parent was made to wait at the accounts section.

Principal patiently sat through the tiresome three days and talked to each and every student individually.

In the accounts section, the parents were given a feedback form to fill. Though many of the replies were good or fair, some went out of their way in creating a whole new option called extraordinary.

On the last day of admissions, an orientation program was held at quadrangle. During the orientation, The chief executive officer, Mr. Swaminathan, Principal Dr. R Rudramoorthy, Dean(Academic ) J.V.Ramaswamy,Dean(Student Affairs) Dr.R.Arumuganathan,Dean (Autonomous functioning) Dr.Mohanram,Dean(Placements) Dr.Nadarajan,The wardens Dr.Elangovan and Mrs.Anitha and Students Union chairman N.S.K.Umesh addressed the gathering.

“The Bright Three Days” ended with a promise of successful future of the students by the management and the SU.

The Alpha...

இதனை இதனால் இவன்முடிக்கும் என்றாய்ந்து
அதனை அவன்கண் விடல்.
This beautiful couplet fit perfectly for the ceremony where the office-bearers of the SU took charge officially.
Preparations were fervent and energetic on the morning of 6th July 2010. Students rushed around purposefully, doing all odd jobs, taking care of every nuance and rehearsing, so that the ultimate event would be a grand success.
Come 11:15 a.m. and the F-Block Assembly hall started filling up; it was packed, in a matter of a few minutes.
The function kicked off well with a soulful prayer song. Dr. Arumuganathan, the beloved Dean of Student Affairs delivered the welcome address and introduced the charismatic, suit-clad ten. Then came the Proposal of the Activities for the year 2010-11, by The Chairman Umesh. The huge hall burst with applause (which continued for quite sometime) when the popular and amiable Chairman was introduced! His speech was energetic, crisp and delivered flawlessly. It left the students inspired to make all the proposed events hugely successful.
The Principal's Presidential address was sprinkled with his happiness at student empowerment and the inducing of leadership qualities in us at this young age.
The Chief Guest Shri. N. Santosh Hegde (LokaYuktha, Karnataka), a former Supreme Court Justice and a staunch opponent of corruption in any form, gave a thought-provoking speech on the current state of affairs in India and how we, the students, should work towards making amends and forming a society that would be free of corruption and bribery. His real-life anecdotes were eye-openers, delivered with calculated humour that was very effective in driving his points home.
The Co-Chairman Lohithaksa Chengappa provided a fitting finale to the event by delivering the most essential vote of thanks that commemorated everyone who made the function what it was- A Grand Success!
The event ended, not with a fullstop, but with a Comma, left for us, the students, to continue! As the Masters of the ceremony summed up, the essence of this SU:
Different Ideas, Different Perspectives;
One Voice, One Vision;
That's the SPIRIT UNLEASHED for You!

The Spirit Business!

Designing this year's logo involved a lot of dedicated people. From a senior who passed out way back in 2008 to a designer who was in China thinking of how to do it-it was a passionate group of friends working on it.The final output was quite eclectic. One logo had the "S" designed as a phoenix rising from the ashes. One logo saw S shaking hands with U.Some were too funny while others were too serious.
The final logo was designed by Santosh(Final year,B.Tech FT).He has a design studio of his own.(www.kitestudios.in).He visualised the SU logo as a bird unflapping it's wings and flying towards success. The tagline was decided upon as "Spirit Unleashed" underlining what Students Union stands for.

Special thanks to:
Rajan Chakravarthy(BE ECE 2004-2008 batch),Shamshu and Kowshik(III MSc TCS),Joseph Chacko(Final BE ECE) for their worthy contributions.

Yes,You Can=S U Can!

You see "Ayudha Ezhuthu" the umpteenth time in DVD and sleep off.Your dreams are full of abstruse images.Students ruling the world.Students governing themselves and everyone else.Students as The Next Big Things. You envisage a PM with an age less than Dhoni's average in the T20 world cup.Next morning you wake up to harsh realities.Karunanidhi is still the CM.Wheelchair is still the CM's refuge.Pratibha Patil's face looks like a fossil unearthed in an archaeological expedition and she is our President. This diminutive woman is the commander-in-chief of the three defence wings. You heave a deep sigh and get ready for your chore.A dull day of college ahead.
And inside the campus you are awestruck at what you see:Students getting the flex arrangement right.Students exhibiting amazing calligraphy in the notice board.Students arranging the chairs in the Quadrangle.Students organising events.Students running the place. You feel proud to be a student of this amazing institution where students turn into professionals and education turns into enlightenment.Abraham Lincoln gets corrected politely in Peelamedu:PSG Tech is of the students, for the students and by the students.
This blog dedicates itself to keep the Techian updated about anything pertaining to Student's Union-The ultimate platform for any activity in PSG Tech.Let this space be a standing proof of Youth Empowerment!Jai "SU" Ho!
